Half the people commenting here supporting this wouldn't even give up their cars. Don't talk to me about some green new deal until you've all stopped driving, I haven't in years. Only cars on the road should be for goods and services, and admittedly all of your lives will be way shittier, mine is. You'll never do it hypocrites.

No! Let's ALL continue to ignore the Earth and its outcry for us to live alongside nature.

Let's just continue to recklessly consume the worlds' resources. Let's just continue to live a life driven by greed. There's nothing wrong with that.

Let's continue to lobby hypocritical Environmental Laws that limits us in consuming natural resources in 1st World countries while these corporate junkies continue to exploit and consume these limited resources from other countries. As if these other countries aren't located on the same planet we all live in/on. As if selectively consuming limited resources - without any regard to the planets' health - won't affect us ALL.

      Let's just be happy!

John Oliver is getting rich acting a fool. Ask him about what his carbon foot print is. I have yet to see any difference in the earth's environment than a century ago.

AGW hysteria is a con. Decades of false predictions and wildly inaccurate climate models. You've been indoctrinated into the Church of Climatology, people. Look at what the Club of Rome has to say about climate change. Think "Agenda 2030".

Too be more clear on the Canada problem, it’s a provincial issue, the oil sands have been devastated by US policy lowering the price of oil and gas around the world to 50$ a barrel which makes the oil sands completely unprofitable and massive wells are being abandoned on a monthly basis, this is great! The rest of Canada could not give a shit about Alberta’s success as it has never passed outside of its border, nobody lives anywhere but British Colombia, Ontario, and Quebec, the good news Ontario is powered primarily by nuclear, British Colombia is powered by 97% renewable energy and Quebec is mixed hydro and fossil fuel nuclear, on a provincial level, we have been and will continue to do our very best to meet the Paris agreement, however, it is not nearly enough. Our weather patterns have gone haywire, droughts and floods in regions that have never ever faced these problems, our forests are burning, are crops are dying, our wildlife is decimated, our pristine untouched wilderness, even without direct human intervention is collapsing, shits getting real, and fast. It’s probably too late to go green, it’s already warmed by 2.5 degrees, that’s a Canadian government study fact. The Paris agreement was meant to keep us at 1.5 well, we have failed and so has the rest of the world, weather we realize it or not are facing head on runaway global warming. If we do not mobilize of the scale of WW2 to fix this, we will go extinct. This isn’t fear mongering it’s fact, and as scary as that may be, as a species we have reached childhoods end and now we must act as adults and take responsibility and action if we want to survive. Writing this it feels surreal like a apocalyptic novella but I’m sitting here on my Mexican vacation on the Gulf of Mexico, the largest oceanic dead zone, decimated by pollution and warming temperatures, and I can’t be happy the water is toxic, the air is polluted and the ecosystem has collapsed it feels hopeless, but, I believe in the human spirits and we can fix this, but it will take everything we’ve got.

The problem with carbon pricing/carbon tax as it's currently been implemented here in Canada is that despite the rebate it disproportionately punishes every day tax payers. It needs to focus more on the massive corporations who are the world's largest polluters. Trudeau would never do that though because he's afraid of the Albertan oil barons. Which is also why, despite campaigning on helping the environment, he helped push through the pipeline that will irrevocably damage our western ecosystem.

I'm sorry, but the Green New Deal was at best a wish list of all the things we'd like to do but won't. Hey now don't worry! The earth is going to be fine....it's YOU that's going away. Personally, I'll be glad to see the earth swallow up the ostentatious liberals like John Oliver as well as the religious right who'll be denying climate change up until their last breath.

Any "Global Warming Plan" proposed by the government will inevitably fail when those who implement it aren't able to give up their own habits of destruction. Do you think for one second that any of those crybaby officials would actually recycle their plastic water bottles, use paper straws, refuse a styrofoam cup, carpool, or even unplug their cell phone charger? NOPE! No matter your political ideologies, if humanity as a whole is not willing to make PERSONAL sacrifices, then the planet is doomed regardless of any government regulations or well intentioned deals. It starts from the bottom up - something most citizens just can't grasp.

They had a carbon tax in Australia, it worked and emissions came down over 1%, stopping a projected 3.6% emissions increase. All with an immeasurable effect on the economy and only costing on average 20 cents extra a day for households.

Then our mainstream media owned by mining and energy companies ran a fear campaign against the government and it became the most hated tax ever, and the government was voted out by a landslide. Can't win if big money loses.

My problem with a Carbon price is that it’s too easy to get out of. Your cost of business goes up and so you pass the cost on to your end consumer. Behaviour doesnt change, it doesn’t have to while you can get away with passing on the cost. I’d rather see a rebate given to companies that lower emissions. The cleaner the energy the cheaper it is and the more people can afford it. Good behaviour is rewarded. More flies with honey.

That's just it, Alex, it's not easy to get out of. You can't just pass the price onto the consumer, because the first company to eat a little into it's profits now can out-compete you. The next company to develop a way to pollute less now has lower costs, so can profit more or offer lower prices than you, and out-compete you.

If what you're saying was true, we'd still have thick ass plastic water bottles, instead of them having become super thin over the years... companies optimize away costs because low costs means a competitive edge. We're just paying the costs of their pollution right now while they get to profit off of our suffering.

Your proposed solution is inferior in basically every way. "Instead of gathering revenue to off-set the costs we would otherwise have to pay, lets spend more of the public dime to finance rich people getting richer! Then we can just whine about debt in a few years and repeal the whole thing!"

You actually attract more flies with vinegar than honey, and humans are naturally more focused on avoiding negative stimuli than seeking out positive ones.

I like John Oliver, however all he is doing is highlighting how ridiculously unrealistic the Green New Deal is. It’s 14 pages.... surely something so drastic and necessary would outline detailed plans, not just overly simplified and unrealistic targets. I’m all for reducing our negative impact on the planet. It’s just funny how all the “do gooders” who drive petrol cars everyday, want someone else to do something about it.
He is always quick to highlight stupidity but refuses to have a balanced view on AOC, who is clearly no more than a puppet for the far left democrats. If only he looked at her “credentials”, lack of sound knowledge and extreme socialist policies he could give a balanced opinion on his show which exists due to capitalism.
Imagine if Trump made errors like that in a draft plan and they were publicized. If anyone really thinks he wouldn’t be criticizing him for that you are deluded.
Bill Nye is not a scientist and he refuses to debate his claims with scientists. The irony that he is melting a plastic globe to demonstrate his point is perfectly indicative of his credentials.
Putting that aside, CO2 is largely misrepresented, plants thrive of increased amounts and that is only a good thing. There is no scientific proof that CO2 causes warming, only that it follows temperature increase which is predictable due to oceans. A “consensus” is not scientific and renowned scientists have disputed this ridiculous claim. For context I used to think we were causing global warming, my mind has been changed by increasing my knowledge, looking at both sides of the debate and the history in incorrect apocalyptic predictions.

In the UK, the sin tax was used on alcohol and tobacco.

The decrease in addiction rates is largely down to how the UK deals with addiction and smoking in general.
However, a carbon tax will not work - it will wither drive business away from the country or, if the business is wealthy enough, they simply won’t care, and carry on polluting. Either way, businesses are more out for themselves than out for ‘good ol’ taxes (pfft).
I want to see a decrease in CO2 emissions, I just believe and have seen that taxation will not work, it leads to searching for loopholes, and it incentivises cheating and businesses going to pollute LIDCs instead. So, it’s possibly better that you work with businesses to be able to positively incentivise, rather than against businesses.

There are other factors at play than just prices, but I can find no evidence of what you're talking about. Looking up UK cigarette smoker rates, and tobacco tax increases, there's been a steady decrease, though whether it's related to the price increase is another matter.

But yes, addictive substances are going to be less affected. They're a special case. Kind of like how if I break your spine, you're going to get healthcare whether it costs $100 or $100000. Addiction makes demand a lot less flexible.

This reasoning doesn't apply at all to most things.

Look, even if Trudeau hadn’t slipped, they’d still have gone to the T word. Look at what happened in Australia- Gillard introduces a Carbon Price, and the conservative opposition leader whet in hard on it being a tax. And- he toppled Gillard at the election because of it (also, his assistant came out and plainly admitted that the tax was a lie they cooked up, because they knew it would work).

You remember that opposition leader- Tony Abbott, best known for eating onions like apples and responding to interview questions with a blank stare.

So Australia was a global leader on carbon pricing, and it was working to reduce emissions. Then Tones got in, immediately reversed it (and said that he’d been helping women because women care about the electricity costs as they do they ironing), and emissions skyrocketed immediately. No more global leadership for us. And it’s still used against anything vaguely progressive, and electricity prices (which continued their upward trajectory rather than going down as promised) are used as an excuse to open more coal fired power stations (even though electricity companies themselves say they aren’t worth the money to build). But Aussies are lost in a conservative haze of bullshit, unfortunately

But it did show that carbon pricing works, at least. And we never even got to the better technology. The price itself lowered emissions.

The green deal should focus on trying to reduce human impact on the changing climate. Also since you are such an intelligent person, you should know that the deffinition of solution is "a means of solving a problem or dealing with a difficult situation.". If there are many faults in the solution it is no longer a solution to the problem. Of course it doesn't take a genius to know that and yet I have to explain it. It’s so depressing to think we came *this* close to have carbon pricing, but the media tricked us into destroying it.
