You basically confirmed all of my worries from when I watched the trailer, so you saved me ten bucks! Thanks bunches.

I think Disney forgot the purpose of animation and the advantages that come with traditional/hand drawn animation. While technically this remake is animation it's far too realistic and therefore minimising the amount of personification the characters can express. Rather than having over exaggerated expressions to create humour/fear/love they ended up with subtle versions that make for a dull film.

Chris just cracked the Disney code to those remakes at the end. 😂

So it’s basically just like the 1998 Psycho remake. EDIT: Chris just mentioned the Psycho remake too. 👍🏼

Fun Fact- many of Simba's facial expressions & hairstyle is copied from actor JTT, aka Jonathan Taylor Thomas!

The difference between this and Mowgli is the motion capture. They should have hired Andy Serkis to do what he does best. It would have been a lot better. I was really excited for this but extremely disappointed in it.

This was the one remake that confused me the most. Its not even live action, its CGI, so what was the point? I mean clearly the point was money but I think it kinda highlights the issue with all of these remakes. They are doing it for the heart and soul of them anymore, its all about making money off of their glory days. They are that guy sitting on the corner going "Hey, remember when I used to do amazing things?" and he has sub-par renditions of art he used to do and people buy them because hey, they are kinda like what he used to do.

Why can't they redo Atlantis? I remember watching that in our local theatre and just being utterly AMAZED by the mix of hand drawn and computer animation.

Actually no. Don't touch it. You'll ruin it.

They're planning a remake of Atlantis: The Lost Empire at this stage of development.

There's a rumour now that Tom Holland is being considered to play Milo Thatch in that live-action remake of Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

Chris, at 8:48 you touched on a VERY ACCURATE OBSERVATION about Disney having their hands in MANY FANDOMS and not the Fans are speaking out - Loud and Strong! Although I'm not a Potterhead, but many people are happy Disney doesn't own Harry Potter in any shape and form and this movie, The Lion King adaption, shows why! Leave the Classics alone!!

The odd thing is that animals like lions and other cats actually do have pretty expressive faces. The movie seems to have actually made them less expressive than the real thing. They're all kind of dead-eyed to be honest.

They remake movies because they have no creativity left and it's easy money and they will continue until people stop paying for it.
                              stop paying for it.

I'm tired as hell from all the realism, when are we going to get a movie that is extremely surrealistic like the movies from 1910 and German Expressionist movies?

Aladdin was the worst remake they have done so far. And after watching this I'm kinda nervous about going to go see this movie. Uggh

License renewals is where most of the business is at. In the industry, IP control is basically priority number 1, because everyone in the circle knows that if they have the rights and they can sit on it, nobody else can do a thing about it, and if anyone gets too close or infringes on any part of the IP (takes a song or a sound clip for instance, or uses an image), they can milk money out of it.

The marketing department knows that what matters isn't whether the film does well or not, but rather how many IPs the company can seize control of, thereby cornering the market. They don't care if the audience isn't satisfied, because they know that a large portion of the audience will see it even if it's with indignation and disappointment. The social media narrative plays into this, because now they can guilt trip people into seeing things they don't like using lines like "if you don't like this you're prejudiced".

IPs are like real estate, ideally you grab them while they're cheap, then you sit on them until the value rises. Prey on the fans that are diehards, and ride the market out until it becomes profitable. But when you have enough money to throw around, that's when you start looking at the costly real estate - the more valuable IPs which have larger crowds. And once you secure an IP, you never let it go, no matter how dead the franchise is - because that's giving your competition a way in and that is the worst outcome possible. A monopoly is the best case scenario for the company, even if it means a completely dead industry eventually (but marketing will always argue that a monopoly will never kill an industry because it means all the talent is gathered in one place, increasing the efficiency).
